The texture observed in this outcrop is called 'fiamme' (meaning flames, from Italian). It is formed when a block of pumice is heated and compressed in a pyroclastic eruption.

I don't really know how to operate this but I gotta start somewhere. this photo is from a fieldwork trip I took in 2022 to sample ignimbrite deposits around New Mexico. Stay tuned for more thoughts and words B)
